The Power of Reflection in Times of Change
The transformative power of reflection helps us navigate uncertainty and discover new opportunities.
Katherine Ortega Courtney, PhD and Dominic Cappello
In the wake of societal disruptions, which include national elections, many of us find ourselves grappling with conflicted feelings, emotional exhaustion, and uncertainty. Disruptive events can shake our sense of balance and leave us pondering numerous questions about the future. However, in these challenging times, the power of reflection emerges as a crucial tool for navigating change and finding clarity and purpose.
The Importance of Reflection
Reflection is a powerful process that requires time and intentionality. It allows us to untangle the complex web of emotions, thoughts, and concerns that often accompany significant disruptions. By taking a step back and engaging in deep contemplation, we can begin to sort through the myriad issues that may feel overwhelming in the moment.
Complexity of Disruptions
Disruptions, whether political, economic, or social, are rarely simple. They often represent a confluence of concerns and challenges, each intertwined with potential solutions and opportunities for action. By reflecting on these complexities, we can gain a more nuanced understanding of the situation and our place within it.
Breaking from the 24/7 News Cycle
In our constantly connected world, it’s easy to get caught up in the relentless stream of information and commentary. However, to engage in meaningful reflection, it’s crucial to step away from the 24/7 mass media cycle. This break allows us the mental space to think deeply and critically about our experiences and beliefs.
A Model for Reflection
Our 100% New Mexico initiative provides an excellent example of how structured reflection can lead to meaningful action. By organizing book clubs to read and discuss Anna, Age Eight, we created opportunities for community members to reflect on the challenges facing children and families in New Mexico. This process of collective reflection led to increased awareness, dialogue, and, ultimately, action.
Moving Forward
As we navigate these times of change, it’s important to remember that our core mission and values remain constant, even as our strategies and approaches may evolve. At the institute, we are committed to engaging in our own deep reflection process, knowing that our vision of 100% of families thriving with access to ten vital services remains unchanged.
In conclusion, the power of reflection lies in its ability to help us process complex emotions, gain new perspectives, and chart a path forward in times of uncertainty. By taking the time to reflect, we can emerge from periods of disruption with greater clarity, purpose, and resilience.
